Breast Lift Q&A

A breast lift repositions the breast tissue and allows the skin to redrape to create a more youthful contour of the breast. This procedure can even help reduce the size of the areola which is the dark skin around the nipple.

An augmentation can be performed simultaneously with a breast lift to create more fullness to the breast.

A mastopexy will help correct the changes that occur to a woman’s breast over time causing a loss of the your youthful shape and firmness. These changes to the breast are caused by:

  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Aging
  • Gravity
  • Heredity

Dr. Patel performs different types of breast lifts. The right type of breast lift for you depends on the following:

  • Your current breast size and shape
  • The size and position of your areolas
  • The amount of excess breast skin that has to be removed
  • Skin quality and elasticity
  • The extent of breast tissue reshaping required

The incisions for the different techniques of the mastopexy surgery involve either an incision around your nipple and areola alone, an incision around the areola and vertically down from the areola to the breast crease, or an incision around the areola, vertically down from the breast crease and horizontally along the breast crease.

A mastopexy is usually performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. It can take approximately two to three hours.

After the surgery, a surgical bra will be placed which will remain on for a couple of days. Once the bra is removed, you can shower. The surgical bra will be replaced with a soft support bra which is worn 24 hours a day for about 4- 6 weeks. The swelling will last for a few weeks and then subside over the next few months. Most patients can return to work within a week or two following their procedure.
