An abdominoplasty is also known as a “tummy tuck.”
A tummy tuck will enhance your look by giving you a flat and well-toned abdomen with a narrow waist. It can improve your appearance and confidence by helping you look and feel younger. The results are long lasting with proper diet and regular exercise.
A tummy tuck involves removing excess skin and fat as well as tightening abdominal muscles resulting in a firm and smooth abdomen. Sometimes despite how hard you try through diet and exercise, these goals cannot be achieved.
A tummy tuck is ideal for individuals of otherwise normal body weight who develop an abdomen which protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes of this include:
Dr. Patel takes the time during every consultation to develop a customized treatment plan for each patient which takes into account your specific goals. This involves learning what the patients want to achieve from a tummy tuck and creating a safe treatment plan to obtain the optimal cosmetic results.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Patel will make an incision in the area close to the pubic hairline. The shape and length of the incision will be determined by the degree of correction necessary. Usually the incision is from hip bone to hip bone. A second incision will be around the navel. Through this incision, Dr. Patel will repair the weakened abdominal muscles and contour your abdominal wall to create a flat, smooth profile. Then the skin flap is stretched over the tightened muscles and excess fat, skin and tissue is removed. Liposuction may be performed at the same time to contour the waist.
Post-operatively an abdominal binder will be applied. In about 1 week, the binder will be replaced with a body compression garment. Dr. Patel recommends wearing the compression garment for about 6 weeks. Strenuous activities should be limited for about 6 weeks. You will receive specific post operative instructions.
Dr. Patel will give you specific post operative instructions to minimize the chance of post operative complications. Post operative complications, although rare, can occur from any surgical procedure and include infection, blood clots, bleeding, and poor healing which may require further surgery.
